If only we could sustain these magical ingredients
once we return home to our
studios. That's the theme for this 3 dimensional
birdhouse, a collaged shelter
for an ArfiberNest, reminding us of the ingredients
so necessary to nurture
and protect our creativity.
For details, check out our web site or email us.

Cost $95. includes a full day instruction
a catered lunch and all kit fees. Some supplies required.

Annie Fain Liden's "Exploring Triptych Book"
There is still available space for Friday and Saturday,
April 4th & 5th.

This book structure, also called “gate fold“ or “triptych,”
is a hard cover,
multi-needle Coptic book structure with a wonderful twist.
The completed
book is essentially two books facing each other, both sewn
to the same
back cover allowing the books to open out like a set of
French doors. We
will add a more sculptural element to our books by
shaping our covers
and text pages to reflect the shape of a house and
sew a button or bead
to each cover, like door knobs, to act as a creative
closure for the book.
A perfect workshop for the beginning or experienced
bookmaker looking
to “breaks the bounds” of the average journal,
sketchbook, or artist book
structure.
Size of the open book is approx 20" (closed book 10")
Cost: $150. for 2 days.
Some experience necessary
Some supplies required.

FEBRUARY 26TH 2008

Brrrrrrrrr
Another cold wave hits Saluda, but if you like bright sun and wearing a warm coat you will do just fine here for today. After today, back up in the 50's, so this little "blip" of a drop is only temporary.

Now on to the announcements ----

Adventures in Italy 2008
Join Jane Powell, mixed media artist and long time shop keeper for this week long workshop
that will focus on the essence of Orvieto, Itlay and its historic surroundings through the use of
organic materials, found objects, and a variety of time tested techniques. By combining your "day to day" explorations in Orvieto with workshop time, you will
complete a very personal chronicle of your adventures in Italy in book form.
Our individual daily experiences, such as visiting a local vineyard, sipping cappuccino with the locals, cooking an Italian feast with other members of the group and exploring the countryside will influence & prompt you to "think outside the box" while creating in a no rules environment with Jane and other like minded artists.
I can hardly wait. Deadline for registering for my September adventure in Italy is June 23rd.
Any questions or concerns can be emailed to Kristi Steiner, the program facilitator.

HENDERSONVILLE: The Arts Council of Henderson County and sponsor Michaelian Home will host an exhibition of the works of the local Tarheel Ruggers Guild and the Randomly Altered Divas, a regional group of book artists.

Congratulations...
to Susan Edmonson, our friend & facilitator from the Believe in Yourself Retreat for having 6 full color pages, with instructions, for her altered jackets in the latest "Altered Couture" magazine. See Susan's work on page 48, 49, 50, 70, 71 & 72. I love that yellow jacket, it is so "Susan" especially all that personalized stitching.
Maybe we can get Susan to teach us how to do some of those embellishments.

Yes, it's still "summer" here in the mountains although the date might suggest the Autumn Season. Warm temps are turning our summer into more than just 3 months, but we are not complaining. At least I'm not.
So, as long as the weather is good, make sure you drive into Saluda to spend some time at our shop to see what's new, what's on sale and what can inspire you.

First of all we want to continue our congratulations to a local artist - - -
Congratulations to Louise McClure, jewelry artist from Saluda. Now, her fabulous jewelry has been shown in latest Metalsmith Magazine (page17). She has shown her jewelry making techniques on HGTV and has taught Memory Journal Charms here at Random Arts is a guild member in the Piedmont Craftsmen in Winston/Salem, NC. She also teaches at Ornamentea in Raleigh. Other than that she is busy working on other pieces to be shown in various other publications such as Lapidary Journal & Beads, Baubles & Gems which is all leading up to a new book featuring her unique design style. How lucky are we to have such a talented artist right here in Saluda?
We are "scheming up a plan" to have Louise teach a metalsmithing class here every Tuesday night from 6-9. Anyone interested please let me know so we can work out the details with Louise. Details to follow.

FRIDAY FREE MINI CLASS THIS WEEK SEPT 28TH AT 11AM ONLY.... JUST ONE SPACE REMAINS
This week you will learn how to create backgrounds on paper with your brayer & resist inks, direct to paper and more. If you have a brayer, please bring it with you to class.

ENCORE! ENCORE! Cheryl Prater's workshop this past Saturday was huge success judging by all the happy participants who were saying things like . . .
• "This is the best class ever"
• "She is an awesome teacher"
• " Please have her come back to Saluda"
• " I am so happy to have finished this project in one day"
• " Thank you, thank you, thank you"
And then . . . a big round of applause from everyone in attendance.... How's that for happy artists?
We are going to give Cheryl a break for a while so she can finish her new book which will be published and available in the fall of 2008. It is going to be very difficult for us to wait that long for the book. Maybe she'll have something else up her sleeve in the Spring.

HOLIDAY RUBBER STAMPS ARRIVING SOON... Yes, it's that time again to start thinking about the upcoming holidays. Among the companies that we have ordered from are Penny Black, Hero Arts, Sandi Miller, Judikins, Art Impressions, Stampers Anonymous, and more.

It was great to see all of you, and now that the retreat is but a memory we can move forward to all that's going on right here in Saluda.
