Fashion rules seem to multiply the older we get. Don’t wear this or you risk looking like mutton dressed as lamb. Always wear this or you’ll look older than you are. Rules are someone else’s idea of what we should wear over 60. By the time we reach this milestone we should wear what makes us feel happy and confident.
Last year I shared 5 things to wear over fifty, that I’ve embraced and found invaluable. They’re all perfect to wear over 60 and today I’m adding to that list. These are not rules. They’re things I’ve embraced over 60 that you may find a good idea.
A WELL FITTING BRA Few of us escape menopause without some changes to the shape of our body. Things move around and often drop. Who knew I was going to get droopy knees? Not me. Small changes in our weight impact how our bras fit and our breasts are often sitting lower than they used to. Women of all ages wear the wrong size bra, but over 60, it can make or break the look of your sweater, dress or blouse. Get a professional bra fitting to ensure you’re wearing the correct bra for your current body and while you’re at it, get a pretty one that makes you feel happy every time you put it on.
A GREAT HAIRCUT Whether you’ve chosen to go gray or not, your hairstyle makes a big statement in your appearance. A stale hairstyle that dates your look is not serving you well. If your hair performs best in a bob, tweak it to look more modern. Have the back stacked to a graduated bob. Add some wisps in front or cut side swept bangs. Always wear your hair short? Use some gel to add texture for a piecey look and/or get a lift on top. Small changes can make your hairstyle look more current so investigate your options and experiment with new products.
BODY MOISTURIZER By 60, our skin isn’t producing the collagen or natural oils we need to maintain supple, smooth skin. If you don’t constantly replace that moisture in the form of oils, creams or lotions you end up with lizard-like skin. Especially on your legs and arms. You apply moisturizer to your face, so be sure to give the rest of your skin the same help. Slather lotion all over when you’re fresh out of the shower to trap moisture against your skin. Then reapply to legs and arms at night. It makes the world of difference.
CLOTHES THAT FIT YOUR CURRENT BODY Buy and wear clothes that fit you right now. You deserve better than to squeeze yourself into things that fit 15, 10 or even 5 pounds ago. They don’t hang properly on your current shape and are uncomfortable…both physically and mentally. Tight clothes add visual pounds too which make you appear larger than you are. Who wants that? If you plan or hope to lose weight in the near future, buy a few quality basics that will restore or maintain your confidence so you feel motivated to care for yourself and eat properly. If you adore clothes that don’t fit you right now, move them to another closet so you don’t see them each morning.
COSTUME JEWELRY Good costume jewelry has the ability to change the look of an outfit and add attitude to your look. Cheap, tacky stuff looks just the way it sounds so don’t go there. Most of us have that classic strand of pearls and tiny gold hoops. Worn ala Grace Kelly, they can age you faster that lipstick bleeding outside the lines in your lips. Step out of your comfort zone and experiment with costume jewelry. Try layering some faux strands or other beads with your classic pearls to make it look more modern. Supersize your earrings to draw attention to your face. Fun bracelets or brooches update your outfits with little financial investment.
SUNSCREEN It’s never too late to protect your skin. Yes, most of the damage and skin cancer we’re dealing with now was caused by lack of care in our youth. But that doesn’t mean we should expose it to more assault now. Our skin is thinner and more fragile over 60, so needs extra protection from the sun. Age spots on the back of our hands are from sun damage so remember to protect them as well.
